Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train now owns the Japanese record books.
After a dozen consecutive weeks at the end of last year as the highest-grossing movie in Japan – it is still going strong – in December it surpassed Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away as the No. 1 highest-earning Japanese film of all time.
Now it is topping the box office in the United States, only two weeks after its release there.
Japan’s top government spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato, this week celebrated Demon Slayer as “bright news that the Japanese manga culture has been regarded highly across the world”.

Netflix s latest anime original, Yasuke, tells the story of Japan s first-recorded Black samurai. The anime series was created by LeSean Thomas, and features the voice of Academy Award-nominee Lakeith Stanfield as the eponymous main character. And while the show s creative team are largely American, Yasuke was produced by Japanese anime behemoth Studio Mappa.(Netflix)

Of the record-high 40 original anime programs Netflix is launching this year, none may be better pedigreed or more timely than “Yasuke,” a six-episode series about Japan’s only known Black samurai premiering April 29.
Voiced and executive produced by Oscar nominee LaKeith Stanfield (“Atlanta”), scored and co-produced by Grammy nominee Flying Lotus, with Grammy winner Thundercat collaborating on the opening song, animated by studio MAPPA Co., Ltd (“Jujutsu Kaisen”), designed by Takeshi Koike (“Redline”) and created and directed by LeSean Thomas (“Cannon Busters”), “Yasuke” is more than just a nod toward diversification and representation in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement. It’s an open embrace of both arguably a first for Japan’s anime industry.
