Dec 16, 2020 05:18:38 PM Public service operators may have to cease operations from tomorrow due to the imminent arrival of category five Tropical Cyclone Yasa to Fiji Waters. This after the weather office had confirmed this morning that severe Tropical Cyclone Yasa has been upgraded to a category five system. And according to the current path of the cyclone, there is a growing likelihood it will pass directly over Fiji s two main islands late Thursday. The storm is packing average winds of around 200 kilometers per hour with momentary gusts of up to 280 kilometers per hour. Fiji Bus Operators Association general secretary Rohit Latchan said the public need to be aware that bus operators may suspend their services tomorrow.

Picture: ELIKI NUKUTABU The Fiji Bus Operators Association (FBOA) has urged members of the public to plan their travel and prepare for service disruptions from tomorrow as Tropical Cyclone Yasa heads for the Fiji group. Association general secretary Rohit Latchan says the travelling public should use the opportunity in the next 48 hours to ensure they top up their essentials while buses are still running and to be aware that any bus operator may suspend services based on weather conditions.

Picture: FT FILE Members of the travelling public are advised to expect disruptions to bus services across the country with the impending cyclone and deteriorating weather conditions. The Fiji Bus Operators Association (FBOA) issued this notice via a statement today. FBOA general secretary Rohit Latchan urged operators to assess the weather situation at regular intervals and make their decisions based on Fiji Meteorological Service warnings, advice of authorities and common sense. “The safety of passengers and drivers is paramount and needless risks should not be taken that will endanger lives,” Mr Latchan said.

Latchan urges operators to assess the weather situation at regular intervals and make their decisions based on weather warnings, the advice of authorities and common sense. The Association says they will work closely with the Land Transport Authority and the National Disaster Management Office during this period.
