I disagree with David Croweâs conclusion (âPM in denial over travel ban backlashâ, May 7). Itâs working out exactly as Scott Morrison planned it, since his main focus now is the election he must call by May 2022. Harsh statements about jail and fines makes him look tough. Thatâs a vote-winner. Dog-whistles get nods of approval from dog-whistle fanciers. His statement that itâs unlikely anyone will be jailed suggests (to the gullible) that he has a softer side (he doesnât), that heâs listened (he hasnât) or that heâs consulted Jenny (pitch to female voters). The announcement of restarting flights relaxes anxious folk, who forget his tendency to announce things six times but do nothing. Now he sits back and watches his approv

Is this another dangerous misstep in our battle against the coronavirus? According to the Premier, the source of the northern beaches outbreak is from overseas and not an existing community strain (“Northern beaches cluster reaches 28 cases”, smh.com.au, December 18).
How can this surprise us when flight attendants working on international routes can apply for exemptions from Australia’s 14-day hotel quarantine program? They can then quarantine at a private residence of their choice; they simply have to provide a written declaration swearing they have not shown COVID-19 symptoms. As at least half of COVID-19 cases are symptomless, this is surely a recipe for disaster.
