Salve Regina University graduates look to a post-COVID future

Newport Daily News NEWPORT  It’s a profession that’s arguably been the subject of heightened public scrutiny since the murder of George Floyd in May 2020, but Madison Mitchell-Laplante has always wanted to be a police officer. “(I’m) not gonna change my ways just because of what’s happening in society,” she said, her gaze steady and firm. Mitchell-Laplante sat in a folding chair in the Rodgers Recreation Center on the Salve Regina University campus Sunday afternoon, spaced 3 feet away from the chair beside her. Masked and dressed in her cap and gown, she waited for the signal to begin the procession to the tent on the McAuley Hall lawn, where the commencement ceremony was to be held.

GoLocalProv | Shelter-in-Place Ordered for Salve Regina Community Following 30+ Coronavirus Cases in 7 Days

Dear Salve Regina community, We have seen more than 30 positive cases of coronavirus among our undergraduate population in the past seven days. While those cases have been addressed and students have been appropriately isolated, we are deeply concerned about this recent uptick and need to implement immediate measures to slow the spread in our community. As a result, the University is implementing a shelter-in-place order for all undergraduate students effective at 10 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3. This order will remain in effect until at least 5 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16. This shelter-in-place order is a direct result of some students failing to comply with basic social gathering guidelines, and the seriousness of this situation cannot be overstated. Further spread of the virus within our campus community may compel Salve Regina to take additional measures, including the closing of campus.

Salve Regina welcomes students back to campus for spring semester

Newport Daily News NEWPORT With the spring semester starting Tuesday, Salve Regina University is welcoming students back to campus with COVID tests in hand. “We made a concerted effort that, if we could do it safely, we really wanted to open, because it was so important that our faculty and staff and students have that community and be here in Newport,”  said university President Dr. Kelly Armstrong on what the school has learned from the past two semesters. Armstrong said the university is keeping the same level of safety precautions as when it reopened in the fall. With 95% of the student body returning to campus, students are required to bring a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of their arrival, as well as get tested on campus at the Rodgers Recreation Center in order to regain access to dorms and class buildings.
