Last week, I discussed controversial remarks from two Georgia congressional representatives. Marjorie Taylor Green’s comments about Guam being foreign and not deserving American money stirred up memories about Hank Johnson’s strange joke/comment about if the U.S. military built up Guam too much, it might capsize.
These represent two ways in which Guam is mentioned in the U.S. which frustrate CHamorus, but also anyone else with proud ties to the island. The first way is statements of ignorance, where a government representative, a media figure or just your average person has no idea what Guam is or where it is.
