In 1864 we buried the first soldier here in maine. And then the secretary of war set aside 200 acres to become a national cemetery. By the end of the civil war there were 15,000 confederate soldiers buried here as well as union soldiers. And general john logan established Decoration Day, she declared may 30 of every year. The idea is that people would visit the graves and place flowers. Decoration day became a more real day. It became so popular that in 1873, quartermaster general Montgomery Meigs held to Decoration Day ceremony and at the time it became a small venue. Every year thousands of people would show up to arlington.
