Join solidarity event at Handy Chapel About a year ago, following the death of George Floyd, a small group of white Christians announced in this space that they would stand silently in front of the Handy Chapel for 8 minutes and 46 seconds — the time it took for Mr. Floyd to be killed. They did stand to confess their inaction and apathy towards their Black brothers and sisters who are living in America feeling like second-class citizens. Much to our surprise, we were joined by about 70 other people, including African Americans. A frequent writer to the Editor chided us for doing too little and doing it too late. We agreed with him.

Central Alabama Community Foundation Announces Grants for 29 Nonprofits Totaling $146,003

Alabama News MONTGOMERY, AL – The Central Alabama Community Foundation (CACF) along with affiliates Autauga Area Community Foundation (AACF) and Elmore County Community Foundation (ECCF) on Thursday, May 6th announced Family Wellness grants for 29 nonprofits totaling $146,003.10. Funds from these grants will go directly toward assisting many within these communities. Family Grants ($23,446.85) $5,439.20 to the YMCA of Greater Montgomery – to provide five lessons of Safety Around the Water training to 420 Montgomery Public Schools third graders $13,007.65 to River City Church – to provide a permanent shower unit and washer and dryer for its Loads of Love initiative that provides a place for the homeless to shower and launder clothes at no cost

From Homeless to Homeowner, Now Car Owner

Alabama News James Spedding was first introduced to us back in 2017. He was homeless and living in a tent near the Alabama river. Over the past 5 years his life has changed dramatically thanks to the love and support of River City Church and the community. Back in 2019 James and his wife Ericka moved into their first home after being in the tent for two years. James is a painter and was working on homes for other people to live in. Sunday, May 2, the couple received a huge surprise at their churches service. An anonymous person gifted them a used Kia Sedona. Emotions overflowed when they were handed the keys to their new car which had been parked outside of the church.

Those who participated were provided with crowns and tiaras, roses and dinner, among other things. The lights were shining brightly at a Lawrence church this past weekend as it aimed to honor the special needs population in Douglas County. Lawrence’s River City Church on Friday held its inaugural “Night to Shine,” which is a prom-like event offered by the Tim Tebow Foundation focused on honoring the “kings and queens” of the special needs community, said Tom Sack, missions and mobilization director for the church.
