Orlando couple Jonathan and Kathy weren t home when Jonathan received a Smart Alert mobile notification from Alexa warning him that the smoke detector was going off at their house.
The couple had set up the free Alexa Guard feature on their Amazon Echo that can detect the sounds of a smoke alarm, glass breaking, and more when you re away from home. And without it, they say, their 5-month old French bulldog Cooper never would have made it out alive.
Ring doorbells and security cameras get opt-in end-to-end encryption
Amazon’s Ring has introduced a new technical preview that brings end-to-end encryption for the company’s doorbells and security cameras, the company has announced. The new encryption is available as an opt-in security feature for those who want to keep their camera footage private in a more secure, but less convenient, way.
If you own a Ring camera device, your camera footage is uploaded to the company’s servers where they’re protected by encryption. However, end-to-end encryption adds another layer of security by locking the footage behind a key that only the customer has, meaning only their enrolled phone can be used to decrypt the content.

Why it matters: Amazon has begun rolling out end-to-end (E2E) encryption to a handful of its Ring security cameras. Until now, video traveling from Ring servers to a user s receiving device like a smartphone or laptop was sent unencrypted. Theoretically, nothing was stopping a bad actor from intercepting and viewing those feeds until now.
On Wednesday, Ring announced that it launched end-to-end video encryption for some of its camera models. The press release calls the feature a technical preview, which is just another way of saying it s in the beta phase. Ring is looking for feedback from the customers who preview it to improve it and iron out any bugs.
