Sierra Club sues Weitsman scrap metal yards over water pollution

Sierra Club sues Weitsman scrap metal yards over water pollution Updated May 13, 2021; By Rick Karlin | Times Union, Albany Albany, N.Y. The Sierra Club is taking a major upstate operator of scrap metal yards to court, contending the company, Ben Weitsman and Son, hasn’t taken adequate steps to protect against storm water discharge washing hazardous metals into streams and rivers including the Hudson. “Defendants engage in industrial activities such as storage and processing of scrap metal, metal shredding, vehicle maintenance, and vehicle traffic in and out of the facilities. As precipitation comes into contact with pollutants generated by these industrial activities, it conveys those pollutants to nearby surface waters,” alleges the suit, filed Tuesday in U.S. Federal Northern District Court of New York.

Presented by the Coalition for Affordable Prescription Drugs Here s a scenario that could play out in the coming weeks: the various state and federal investigations into Gov. Andrew Cuomo could determine he’s acted inappropriately, but lack the proof needed to take further action against him. All eyes and especially those of the governor’s critics would very likely turn to the Assembly, which has launched an impeachment investigation into the governor.

NY lawmakers want more oversight for broadband internet providers

NY lawmakers want more oversight for broadband internet providers Updated May 04, 2021; By Rick Karlin | Times Union, Albany Albany, N.Y. Less than a month after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation mandating $15-a-month broadband service for low and moderate-income New Yorkers, a pair of lawmakers are calling for the state Public Service Commission to have greater oversight over broadband providers. Two Democrats, Sen. Sean Ryan of Buffalo and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic of New York City, are introducing legislation that would give the PSC the ability to regulate broadband internet services, including the Voice Over Internet Protocols, or VOIPs, that also carry telephone service for many internet customers.
