A special judge has been selected for the murder trial of Stanford Shelton, according to the Commonwealth’s Attorney Richie Kemp. Timothy Langford, the chief circuit judge for the First Judicial Circuit in Kentucky, will preside over Shelton’s trial in place of newly-appointed Graves County Circuit Judge Kevin Bishop. Kemp noted it only recently came to the court’s attention that Bishop had represented the murder victim, SaVannah Hancock, in a previous case several years prior. Langford was selected in order to avoid even the “appearance of impropriety.” Before accepting the judgeship last month, Bishop was a defense attorney who had represented residents of Mayfield and Graves County for 33 years.
