Newport Daily News
Some police officers from departments across the country are under investigation, or have been charged or disciplined, for their alleged participation in the riot at the U.S. Capitol building earlier this month.
And it sparked concern on a local level.
Former Newport School Committee Vice Chairwoman Aida Neary emailed members of the City Council and the city manager earlier this month copying The Daily News to inquire about potential Newport police or fire department participation in the Capitol riot. I certainly am not assuming that any one of our Newport forces would take part in this, Neary wrote in her email. But as more and more national reports talk about veterans and active members of police forces, I think it would behoove the city to reassure citizens about members of Newport police and firefighter community.
