Oyewusi Gureje: El Numéro Uno, By Remi Oyeyemi

In appreciating someone that is very special in one way or the other, at times, one falls short of words. To meet this challenge, I have litigated the length of lexis and strata of structure of English Language lexicon. I grimaced through the dogma of grammar. I dug the depth of diction. I paddled in the puddle of composition. I bathed in the drizzle of breviloquence to appropriate the mechanics of summary.

Tropical cyclone-specific mortality risks and the periods of concern: A multicountry time-series study

Author summary Why was this study done? Tropical cyclones (TCs), among the most destructive and costliest climate extreme events, are expected to be more intense due to climate change. Despite the widely acknowledged hazards, a consistent and quantitative assessment of the mortality risks of TC across countries is lacking. Such quantitative and comparable evidence across countries is urgently required to better understand the health effects and respond to the potentially increasing hazards. No previous studies have characterized the periods of concern (POC), exposure-response (ER) relationship, and temporal trends of the TC health risks, directly relevant to more precise and effective preparedness and mitigation strategies. What did the researchers do and find? Using mortality data from 494 TC-exposed locations in 18 countries or territories, we quantified the TC-specific mortality risks and POC of the 382 TC events that affected these locations. The ER relationships and temporal

How we can solve the crisis in UK gambling policy

Recent consultations on UK gambling policy do not deliver the transformational change needed, write May CI van Schalkwyk and Rebecca Cassidy We are at a perilous moment in the regulation of gambling in the UK. We must choose between continuing with the current laws, designed to protect and expand the gambling industry, or changing our approach to focus on preventing gambling harm. The incremental changes to gambling regulation proffered by the government’s white paper1 are superficially appealing, but limited reforms will ultimately help to conserve flawed legislation. A new Gambling Act, founded on public health principles, is needed urgently.23 Implementing a statutory levy on gambling operators will not be sufficient to reduce the harms. On the contrary, taking money from the gambling industry entrenches the dangerous idea that the industry can grow without limits, as long as it pays for the harm it causes.4 Given what we know about gambling harms, ranging from family breakdowns
