An historically bad start by Mikko Koskinen and some sloppy, undisciplined play by the guys in front of him led to a 6-3 Canucks win over the Oilers at Rogers Place Thursday night.
At times, it felt as if the home team may find their way back into this one. In fact, they drew within 2 goals of the Canucks twice but couldn’t hold onto the momentum.
Here’s the tale of the tape.
Edmonton Oilers Game Grades
MIKKO KOSKINEN. 8. Made 29 saves in his first start in third weeks. That’s tough to do. And he was very good early. Got a skate on a dangerous chance by Stastny after a turnover by Kulikov about 5 minutes in. A 2
nd Period stop on Scheifele that preserved the 2-1 edge. Darted out a left pad on a chance by Appleton in the 3rd, one of 15 saves in that frame. Named the game’s third star. Credit to Oilers radio host Reid Wilkins who dug up this stat: Koskinen owns a .929 SV% since Mike Smith returned from injury.

A month has come and gone since
Zack Kassian last suited up for Edmonton Oilers, back on Feb 08 in Ottawa. The truculent winger had just been called out for indifferent play by coach Dave Tippett who
said, “we’d like to see him get a bit more engaged in games, that’s kind of an understatement.”
Kassian took to the ice with a burr in his saddle that night, but it was a short-lived appearance. He “announced his presence with authority”, dropping the gloves with Senators’ tough guy Erik Gudbranson literally 2 seconds into his first shift of the night. A spirited tilt ensued, but with a bad outcome as Kassian busted up his hand, likely with a wild punch to Gudbranson’s helmet or visor. He emerged from the penalty box for one shift, handled the puck once, and disappeared down the tunnel.
