so it s going to be a challenger aircraft from what we understand. it s a very large, luxury kind of a jet. it holds 14 people. and from what we understand, they re going to move her bed. she ll be attached to whatever kinds of medical equipment that she ll need, maybe an i.v., that kind of thing. then she ll be put on to that aircraft and from there, they will depart tucson and make that 2 hour 15 minute ride or flight to houston. and if you re just joining us, i just want to explain to you what is happening. congresswoman giffords now in an ambulance, on her way to an air force base where that plane is awaiting to take her to houston to that rehab center. we ve been following the ambulance down the streets of tucson. well wishers have been lining the streets. hundreds of people calling congresswoman giffords saying where can i stand to see the
and then right up in front is the are the motorcycle riders. and we saw probably a group of maybe two or three dozen well wishers holding signs up. there you can see the giffords for congress signs that many people have out here as her ambulance passes by. elizabeth, i m curious, you ve been in houston for a couple days. what is the public reaction been like there? reporter: you know, i think people are proud that she s come here. i think it was unexpected. she s from arizona. and so i think it was unexpected she was going to come here. there has been a lot of other patients and the families and the hospital come up to me, why are all these cameras here? when we tell them, i think they feel very proud she s coming to her hospital. mark kelly, her husband, has a connection to houston. that s perhaps one of the reasons they chose this particular rehab center. besides, it s one of the finest in the world. reporter: he said there are great centers where he could have taken her in

congresswoman gabby giffords was moved to a rehab hospital in houston. touching down just over an hour ago she reached the next step in her recovery only 13 days after a bullet was fired through the left side of her brain. she left tucson university medical center in an ambulance escorted by police and vfw bikers, giving her a dramatic send-off. throngs of supporters wished her well, doing everything they could to show how much they cared. we wanted to support her. it s bittersweet, because we certainly will miss her, but we know she s getting the best care. just so they know tucson and the country is behind them. i thought it was an opportunity to show my support for her. of course gabby s husband mark kelly has been by her side day and night. on thursday he talked about her recovery. she ll smile at me, she did a
brain injury, a traumatic injury as opposed to a stroke, can be better. why is that? well, strokes usually involve a specific part of the brain where that brain tissue actually dies, becomes newer kr s newer dies. there s bleeding, swelling, but nots like you have one chunk of the brain that is just completely wiped out. it s much more subtle and diffused. many of these patients can have a better outcome. i think that s what we re seeing with her. that is amazing, and it is another reason for optimism, obviously. i d also say, doctor, she might not spend as much time in the rehab hospital as we might have thought. in fact, some people are saying maybe between five to eight weeks and then she would continue to get therapy as an out-patient. is that sort of the standard now? yeah. i mean, i think that is. host most of the recovery in a trauma brain injury, the first
