The COVID conundrum can intensify crises faced by women who are in dangerous domestic situations.

“We know that just because everybody is being told to stay at home, home might not be a safe place for everyone. People can’t necessarily stay at home when their home is not the safe place.

The wonderful, dedicated people who work at Regina’s women’s shelters make it their mission to assist those who are in need, often desperately so.
But while tending to critical situations faced by others, employees must also be cognizant of their own well-being.

“We have a sign at SOFIA House that says, ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup. Help yourself first,’ ” says the shelter’s executive director, Tmira Marchment.
After all, who knows the subject better than the people being interviewed?
That became apparent, again, this week in conversation with two executive directors Tmira Marchment (SOFIA House) and Stephanie Taylor (Regina Transition House) for a series of stories on the Leader-Post Christmas Cheer Fund.
Both of them answered the final question by emphasizing that, despite all the restrictions necessitated by COVID-19, Regina’s women’s shelters remain available to anyone who must escape an abusive domestic situation.
“I think it’s important for members of the public to know that shelters continue to be open, and we’ll always help people who need a safe place to stay,” Marchment said.
