Aboitiz, MERALCO ditching coal for Subic joint venture on April 29, 2021 at 5:20 pm Aboitiz Power Corporation and MERALCO PowerGen Corporation (MGen) said that they are dropping coal from their power project under Redondo Peninsula Energy, Inc. (RP Energy) in Subic, Zambales. Instead, RP Energy AboitizPower’s joint venture with MGen and Taiwan Cogeneration International Corporation is looking into building a liquefied natural gas (LNG) power plant within the area of its supposed 600-megawatt facility. MGen is the power generation arm of the Manila Electric Company (MERALCO) AboitizPower President and CEO Emmanuel Rubio said early stage feasibility studies for gas have already begun on at least two locations.

Green energy group lauds cancellation of 660-MW Subic coal project

By TED CORDERO, GMA News Published April 28, 2021 7:51pm The Power for People Coalition (P4P) on Wednesday lauded the cancellation of an energy consortium’s plan to put up a 660-megawatt coal fired power plant in Subic, Zambales. In a statement, P4P said Redondo Peninsula Energy Inc., a joint venture between Meralco’s generation arm Meralco PowerGen, Aboitiz Power Corporation, and Taiwan Cogeneration Corp., has said it will no longer pursue the coal-fired plant project. The consortium has announced that it will move away from coal and is reserving the site for a possible gas project. “While the cancellation of the Subic coal plant is a welcome development, we no longer find it surprising given the many triumphs that groups advocating for clean energy have won over it,” said Gerry Arances, Convenor of P4P.
