Free student meals start Monday

A free meals program provided by local school districts aims to keep children fed and healthy over the summer. As in previous years, both Temple and Belton independent school districts will offer their summer school meal program to children this year. The two programs will begin Monday at most locations and distribute both breakfasts and lunches. Donna Shelton, assistant director of nutrition services at BISD, said the summer meals are a part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture program that helps feed children. “Many children rely on school meals during the academic year, and we’re thrilled to be able to continue offering them throughout the summer months at no cost to the child,” Shelton said. “These nutritious meals will help ensure the kids have a healthy summer and are ready to learn when school resumes in August.”

Student boom: Central Texas school districts dealing with rapid growth

One in a series. The need for new or expanded school campuses grows daily at Central Texas school districts — especially those located off the state’s busiest highway. By the dozens, new students arrive every month. From just south of the Bell County line to its northern boundaries, school districts adjacent to or near Interstate 35 — Temple, Belton, Salado, Academy, Troy and Jarrell, for example — are dealing with booming student populations that will require campus improvements to accommodate growth in the coming years, officials said. School officials are preparing for the growth by looking at both short- and long-term options: Temple ISD purchased land for a planned elementary that could open in fall 2023.

11 Bell COVID-19 deaths bring toll to 276

The Bell County Public Health District announced 11 new COVID-19 related deaths on Monday, as cumulative cases near 20,000. Active cases dropped to 1,370 — 137 fewer than its last update on Friday. On Thursday, Health District Director Amanda Robison-Chadwell said local health officials anticipated that COVID-19 related deaths in Bell County would rise. “I expect to see more added for the next several days as we receive certificate updates from our period of high hospitalizations,” she said at the time. The county death toll is now 276. Bell County has now totaled 19,669 cases, and at least 18,299 people have recovered to date, according to the health district.
