Rausser College of Natural Resources extends P/NP policy into summer

Following the decision of UC Berkeley College of Letters and Science to extend its current pass/no pass, or P/NP, policies, the Rausser College of Natural Resources, or CNR, also extended its P/NP policy through summer 2021. Summer CNR policies will be in line with its fall and spring grading options. Major and minor requirements and prerequisites, as well as all college requirements, may be taken P/NP, according to the CNR website. Students are encouraged to seek advice on how grading options may impact their academic endeavors before changing their grading options. CNR reminded students that pass grades must account for less than one-third of a student’s total units completed at UC Berkeley. Though deadlines for changing grading options in the fall and spring were changed, summer 2021 deadlines will remain unchanged from CNR’s regular summer session deadlines.

UC Berkeley professor, students discuss equity issues of climate change

As climate change causes temperatures to fluctuate, ocean levels to creep higher and wildfires to appear more frequently, its impact can be felt all around the world. However, not everyone suffers equally. Black, Indigenous and people of color, or BIPOC, and low-income populations disproportionately bear the issues born from climate change, according to Michael Mascarenhas, UC Berkeley associate professor in the department of environmental science, policy and management. This long history of discrimination and injustices faced by these communities often leaves them in neighborhoods and situations where they are more exposed to harmful environmental conditions. “The less money and the less capital and the less resources you have, the less equipped you are to handle climate change,” said Sarah Naameh, a member of Students of Color Environmental Collective, or SCEC. “The most horrible part is that (marginalized communities) are playing such a little part in this global natural

Resistance and resilience: Berkeley Student Farms blooms amid pandemic

Resistance and resilience: Berkeley Student Farms blooms amid pandemic Moe Sumino/Courtesy When life came to a screeching halt last spring, Berkeley Student Farms, or BSF, found its purpose.  BSF is a coalition that sprouted into existence this past summer, uniting the seven existing UC Berkeley student-run gardens under common values. By sharing resources and knowledge, the gardens can accomplish more together than they were able to apart. “We have students that want to learn more about how to feed themselves and not be so reliant on a broken food system,” said Moe Sumino, a campus sophomore majoring in conservation and resource studies. Sumino is the gardens data and finance coordinator of the Berkeley Food Institute, a campus hub that facilitates the distribution of resources to improve our food systems. She provides structural support for all seven student farms, manages budgets, orders equipment and communicates with other organizations. Along with several other student
