Cade Smith
The districtâs board of trustees approved Cade Smithâs contract as the next superintendent. Smith could not be at the meeting since he was attending a board meeting at the district heâs departing, Brock ISD. Smith officially takes over at NBISD on June 1.Â
âI am so honored the NBISD board of trustees has selected me to be superintendent of this exceptional school district!â Smith said in a district statement released Tuesday afternoon. âI cannot wait to get started working alongside our staff to serve this amazing community.â
The board shifted around, making re-elected board member Eric Berquist of District 3 the next board vice president. Board secretary David Heefner remained in his position.
New Braunfels ISD board of trustees has approved Dr. Cade Smithâs contract as the next superintendent.
The former Brock ISD superintendent replaces the retired Randy Moczygemba while Dr. Matthew Largent served as interim superintendent.
Smith has served in education for about 22 years, and this was his third year as Brock ISDâs superintendent.Â
Moczygemba announced his plans to retire on June 30 back in January. In March he later announced he would be leaving earlier than planned and used accrued time off to retire early.
The board went through the superintendent search process with search firm JG Consulting, which has helped independent school districts such as Austin ISD and San Marcos ISD.
Smith is currently the superintendent of Brock ISD.
âItâs just a phenomenal school district,â Smith told the Herald-Zeitung alongside his family. âItâs a great opportunity for the family and to serve the community like this.â
The board voted 7-0 on the lone finalist during a special board meeting Monday after months of selecting a search firm, vetting applications and conducting interviews.
Following the announcement, the board must now enter a required 21-day waiting period. The board will approve the superintendentâs contract during its May 10 board meeting.
âYour board took this responsibility to find a new superintendent to lead this district very seriously,â  NBISD Board President Sherry Harrison said. âWeâre very invested in this process, we understand that you all may not know where we stand on this spectrum in terms of goals and objectives.â
New Braunfels ISD superintendent Randy Moczygemba is stepping away earlier than planned, the school district announced over the weekend.
Moczygemba planned on retiring June 30 after 14 years of service, but the district said he will use accrued days off to leave ahead of that date.
His days of leave will run from March 22 until his resignation takes effect on June 30. Â
Moczygemba and the district signed off on his early retirement Friday afternoon, school district president Sherry Harrison said on Tuesday.
The NBISD board hosted a special meeting Monday to interview potential interim superintendents during its executive session.Â
It voted to authorize Harrison to âfinalize details regarding the selection of an interim superintendent.â
New Braunfels ISD will continue to require masks in its schools, the districtâs board of trustees decided on Monday night.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott â who lifted the mask mandate effective on Wednesday â left the decision up to the Texas Education Agency which then left it up to local school boards.
âWeâre just right on the cusp of getting mass vaccinations and thereâs only, what, 55 days or so left of school?â NBISD trustee Eric Bergquist said. âWe need to finish strong, we will revisit these policies as vaccines go up.â
Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath held a virtual meeting with superintendents last week in which he said masks in public schools are required unless a local board made them optional.
