masking a far larger armored force and get. an aerial of ukraine cities that we ve yet seen. i m hugely impressed by the ukrainian president vladimir zelensky s courage. i never really anticipated that he would rise to the occasion in this way. i m deeply moved by the heroes of the young ukrainians, the soldiers and the volunteers who are risking their lives to defend their country. every american should relate to what they re doing because they re fighting for freedom and their fighting for democracy in their risking their lives for an ideal. it is deeply moving but let s not kid ourselves. there likely to be overwhelmed if russia deploys the kind of brute force that we see in the russians deploy, for example in syria after 2015. if you go back even further, they are capable of destroying cities and killing civilians in very large numbers. the key point putin is in a
early days of the conflict. i asked the secretary general about the latest situation on the ground as well as president putin s decision to put his nuclear forces on high alert. take a look at our interview. reporter: how long do you think that the ukrainians can hold russia off, particularly in kyiv? it is a very unpredictable and fluid situation. so what we see is a new wave of russian attacks, of russian forces coming in, but we also continue to see that ukrainians are much stronger, much more dedicated and able to provide much more resistance than the russians expected, but also i think many experts in the west expected. that s a demonstration of courage which is extremely impressive. reporter: a lot of people are waking up scared to the news that president putin has put his nuclear forces on high alert. should people be scared right now? it is a reckless and
ukraine. there are good roads that can make those journeys. i think the logistics train will move with it. so that s one positive factor. the other one that we haven t mentioned, who is central to all of this, is president zelenskyy, who is turning out to be, you know, kind of near churchillian in his ability to rally his population. yes. to stand tall. for a guy who is 5 6 , my height, he is standing tall in this crisis and doing just extraordinary things. we need to make sure he doesn t get taken out. he is becoming quite central to this. but the fact that he is rallying his troops, the fact that he is calling for, i don t want a ride out of the country, i want more ammunition, that s a quote from president zelenskyy. it is a pretty good one. yeah. i think that will motivate the west to get weapons in the hands of these ukrainians. by the way, closing on this, i like the idea of fighter jets because three nato nations operate the mig-29.
pretty soon. we have just seen evidence of war crime, another one committed by the russian troops in ukraine. they are using cluster munitions. shelling residential areas in various cities indiscriminately. what else do we need to see in order to understand what is going on right now in ukraine? what do western allies, european allies need to do to stop this? we have to arm ukraine and this is what we are doing right now. also other nato allies, all allied country. this is incredibly really. what extent mr. putin has achieved what we have been struggling to accomplish for so many years. he has resuscitated the european union. he has re-enforced nato s unity. he has strengthened the national identity of ukrainians and basically reversed many political trends in germany. this is absolutely superb. i mean, this is what we were expecting for so many years. now it is happening
leadership that is rallying ukrainians. it is a resistant is the fact that we have not gone all in on this already. diplomatically, militarily, and economically. this is not a time for pause read we need to get in there and help them on the ground. we have columns of his troops lined up ready to be interdicted. we need to give that help to the ukrainians but we are sitting back and were not doing anything and were saying everything is on the table. putin is a global threat. he is an enemy to the world and that s what we have to start telling people who he is. we cannot take pressure off china either. we have to go after china, they are in it and we don t want them going into taiwan. this is huge, we ve got to come together. we had to lead the world in supporting president zelensky
