But where did the term Little America come from . It came from a remarkable project in the 1950s, led by a team of American Engineers, to develop parts of southern afghanistan to dig irrigation candles, build dams, in the very same terrain that the current troop surge unfolded in. Back then, these American Engineers decided to build a model town for themselves. Right smack dab in the middle of the desert in the province. Eight square blocks. Four blocks by two blocks. Instead of traditional afghan homes, big tall walls, they built suburban style american homes, ramblers with white stucco walls. What do you make of this, whats your take on all this . Its a one of a series of decisions the president has made basically irrelevanting his military advisors so whether it be in iraq which is now unraveling very significantly or whether it be the decisions about a surge and how many and how soon they leave. Theres a series of decisions all of which the president and the Vice President have overruled on military leaders of their advice and council. Which is the president s right to do. But each time i believe that it ensures the risk of failure. I think theres a very very great risk now that with the president s announcement that they are basically going to be out, that the afghans will not be able to effectively counter what still remains a significant cal bon

The mass incarceration of poor people of color in the United States is tantamount to a new castelike system, one that shuttles our young people from decrepit, underfunded schools to brand new hightech prisons. It is a system that blocks poor people, overwhelmingly poor people of color, into a permanent second class status nearly as effectively as earlier systems of racial and social control once did.
