But where did the term Little America come from . It came from a remarkable project in the 1950s, led by a team of American Engineers, to develop parts of southern afghanistan to dig irrigation candles, build dams, in the very same terrain that the current troop surge unfolded in. Its a one of a series of decisions the president has made basically irrelevanting his military advisors so whether it be in iraq which is now unraveling very significantly or whether it be the decisions about a surge and how many and how soon they leave. Theres a series of decisions all of which the president and the Vice President have overruled on military leaders of their advice and council. Which is the president s right to do. The mass incarceration of poor people of color in the United States is tantamount to a new castelike system, one that shuttles our young people from decrepit, underfunded schools to brand new hightech prisons. It is a system that blocks poor people, overwhelmingly poor people of color, into a permanent second class status nearly as effectively as earlier systems of racial and social control once did.
