Hope House in need of volunteers before grand opening

KXLY April 23, 2021 7:10 PM Elenee Dao Copyright 4 News Now SPOKANE, Wash. – Volunteers of America’s new Hope House shelter is in need of volunteers before holding its grand opening event Monday. The new Hope House, located on Third Avenue, is a new building to help shelter at least 160 people. There will be 100 beds on the first floor of the building for a temporary homeless shelter, which will only help women. Then, on the second and third floor of the building, there will be 60 apartment units for men and women. Rae-Lynn Barden, the marketing and communications director for the VOA, said they are in need of volunteers to build bunk beds for the women’s shelter.

KXLY December 22, 2020 6:46 PM Elenee Dao SPOKANE, Wash. Women in need of temporary housing will soon have a new place to stay. Volunteers of America is building a new shelter right now. “We do not like turning women away every night, and that’s what we’ve been having to do. Our community has such a need for this,” said Rae-Lynn Barden, the communications and marketing director for Volunteers of America. On average, almost every night, Barden says they have to turn away 10 to 15 women from its Hope House shelter because it’s full. The old shelter used to sleep nearly 40 women.

How some Christmas Bureau volunteers got honored for their efforts in spite of this year s changes

By Nina Culver The Spokesman-Review Employees at Volunteers of America are traversing the area this week dropping off gift bags with book-themed cupcakes to say thank you to their volunteers who usually staff the book tables at the Christmas Bureau. Volunteers of America, Catholic Charities and The Spokesman-Review team up each year to put on the Christmas Bureau, handing out grocery store vouchers to families in need at Christmas, along with a toy and a book for each child. “At the Volunteers of America, our part is the books,” said Marketing and Communication Director Rae-Lynn Barden. “That’s what we do. We couldn’t do it without volunteers.”
