In a stellar amateur career, he won the 2009 Scottish Boys' Under-16 Championship, the 2010 Scottish Boys Championship and the 2012 Scottish Amateur Championship.

Excelled as an amateur – a victory at the 2016 Australian Amateur Championship helped propel him up to eighth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.
Joined the paid ranks in 2017 after representing Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup, and caught the eye during his first professional start at the Portugal Masters on the European Tour when he finished tied 12th after carding four successive under-par rounds.

Became the first Japanese winner on Continental Europe in 40 years as he claimed a famous maiden DP World Tour title at the Cazoo Open de France in his rookie year, carding a five under par final round 66 at Le Golf National to win by two strokes.
