It once operated on St George’s Square, close to the docks. The terminus opened up in 1863, replacing a wooden structure that stood adjacent to Rabbit Hill before. However, its life was relatively short lived, closing almost 20 years later.   The Strand was forced to close after a new loop line and bigger station at Abbey Road was introduced, which covered a larger area than this one ever could. However, the Grade II listed building wasn’t demolished. It was later used as the offices for the Furness Railway Company. It was even used as a working men’s club for over over 100 years.

Haworth mum, 93, and son join forces to publish book

A SON and his 93-year-old mother have published a book. Cobbled Together features the poetry of Dorothy Nixon, who was born in Haworth and has lived there virtually all her life. And her son, Ashley, has provided photos that he’s taken over the years around the village and in the surrounding landscape. Staff writer WELLSBURG Wellsburg Council Tuesday gave its blessing to plans to honor local veterans with banners along state Route 2 and considered canceling the city’s primary election. Council heard from Eric Fithyan and Donna Sullivan, who proposed inviting families and others to sponsor banners bearing the names and images of local veterans. Fithyan said MonPower has been asked for permission to hang the 21 inch by 48 inch banners on 100 utility poles along the highway within the city. Pending the company’s permission, he asked if city crews would hang the banners, which also could include each veteran’s military branch and military conflicts in which he or she served.
