Punjab MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira was arrested in September last year in a drugs case dating back to 2015. He told the High Court that he was arrested only because he had parted ways with the Aam Aadmi Party.
Rathee in his 2008 defamation case had alleged that he was shocked and deeply hurt by a news item published by The Indian Express under the title “Accused says he bribed ADGP, sought police protection”.
The high court said, “It must be emphasised that compensation is a more comprehensive form of pecuniary relief, which involves broad-based approach, keeping in view the purpose of providing stability and continuity in peoples’ life, in the future.”
