Dipping their little fingers into little pots of paint, the Kindergartners at Napaâs Pueblo Vista Magnet School took a break from academics to do something different: make paper flowers.
Some Kinders carefully painted dots and spots on their flower page. Others covered the whole flower in color, mixing the red, pink, blue, orange and purple colors into new shades.

They were creating art on Thursday morning, but not the kind that goes home to mom or dad. These flowers would be gathered into a âbouquetâ and presented to their classroom teacher from last year.
We are at the day for the NVUSD Board of Trustees potential vote to close Harvest and River Middle Schools, a decision that will have a profound negative impact on our community.
There has yet to be evidence provided as to why the proposed âwall to wall DLI Middle School Language Academyâ concept cannot be developed and promoted at the current Harvest Middle School site. What is the rationale for moving the already established DLI program across town? Will a new campus be able to reduce DLI attrition at the middle school level? 5th and 6th grade families at NVLA and Pueblo Vista should be surveyed to ask that question. That hasn t happened. Moving forward with a plan that displaces two established programs for an undeveloped idea with no contingency plan is extremely short sighted.
Earlier this year, I was invited to be a member of the NVUSD Middle School Redesign Task Force. I was happy to serve. In addition to serving on the task force as a Pueblo Vista parent, I have also worked in public higher education for more than 20 years, so I have a vested interest in ensuring that our P-12 and higher education systems are working together to prepare students to achieve the credentials and degrees that our economy and society will need in the coming decades.
I knew some of the history that led to the task force â that the district made and then walked back a decision to close Harvest Middle School in October of 2020. I was hopeful that the task force process would support a full and open discussion of a variety of possibilities. Unfortunately, it was not meant to be.
