so the only solution to this is having the white house as well. the person in the president picks foreign policy, churns out the regulations. does all of these things that obama has been doing. that is why we have to have not only the white house but congress and yes, i think there is a case of expectations set in the wrong place, and the limits of the constitution limited us. do i believe we can be better at being opposition party? you bet i do. do i think we have to be a proposition party? i do. i lied and i m going to ask another question. sorry. cheating. every conservative can expect you re going to layout an inspiring agenda? yes. and your promises is that you ll get this done?
new house speaker paul ryan won or took hard to say exactly what happened there but he won his leadership position by promising to make changes and get things done. we need to move from on opposition party to being a proposition party. because we think the nation is on the wrong path, we have a duty to show the right one. our next speaker has to be a visionary one. in his first order of business, speaker ryan declared that he will not allow a vote on comprehensive immigration reform bill as long as president barack obama is in office. i m not exaggerating or extrapolating or inferring. in his own words in an op-ed last week for usa today speaker ryan said, the house of representatives will not vote on comprehensive immigration legislation as long as president obama s in office. so speaker ryan has shut down any movement on immigration reform simply because of who is
many came out of republican presidents, but it is in part because of exactly this sort of massive resistance strategy. it is not because democratic presidents haven t put them forward. it s a bit like the aca, for example president obama actually put forward for a long time what had been a republican health care reform plan then got massive resistance to a think that had initially been introduced by republicans. it s not just that. they d like to shut down the government and planned parenthood. i m not trying to be partisan right now. i was mayor of a big city. you have to lead oftentimes working with everyone. but at the end of the day they ve gone so far to the right on so many things, i just don t see how they re going to let ryan be the speaker of, as he said, the proposition party. because that means that they re going to have to be compromise on some of these issues and i just don t see them doing that right now.
think key is to offer the country a very bold alternative, a bowled agenda how to solve this country s problems. i think that s how we unify. how much rope do you give the freedom caulks? a lot of members are getting a lot of heat for just supporting you. i think the is it key is we need congress is it working as the founders intended. that s number one. number two, i think it s very important we are a successful opposition party, not only do we use the tools that we have to be a successful opposition party, but we have to, number three, be a proposition party. this is where we have fallen down. i think this is what unifies republicans, which is to show the country how we would do things differently. how do you overhaul the tax code? what is the replacement of obamacare look like? how do you effectively attack the root causes of poverty to help people build their lives? how do you get economic growth? those are the things that people are hungry for. that s what we have to offer the
we don t like the direction the country is headed. we don t like the direction the president is taking the country. and so we have to be an effective opposition party, but most importantly, number four, i think that means we have to be able a proposition party. we have to be the alternative party. if we don t like what s going on, we owe it to the people of this nation, to our constituents, a bold, specific and clear agenda, vision for how we would do things differently and that is what a good alternative party looks like. you re now the face of this so is this you that has to do this? you re in the middle of a presidential campaign. i see this as a joint effort. it s an awkward time. you re the face of the party for now. for a couple months. it s not a me thing. i didn t get elected dictator of the house, i got elected speaker of the house. we ve been too timid on ideas. we ve been bold on tactic but timid on ideas, on policies. that s where we need to go and this is what pe
