How private is your Gmail, and should you switch?

Illustration by Paul Tansley. Illustration by Paul Tansley. You might be surprised how much Google’s email service – and others – know about you. Here’s how to set some boundaries Sun 9 May 2021 04.00 EDT Most people are aware of the cookies that track them across the web, and the privacy-invading practices of Google search, but did you know Google’s email service, Gmail, collects large amounts of data too? This was recently put into stark focus for iPhone users when Gmail published its app “privacy label” – a self-declared breakdown of the data it collects and shares with advertisers as part of a new stipulation on the Apple App Store.

MSCHF offers 100 pounds of cookies for collecting website cookies

Picked by Techconnect s Editors The Internet is a weird and wonderful place. The latest weirdness comes from the team at MSCHF of the Lil Nas X “Satan” shoe debacle. The Brooklyn-based art collective’s latest effort is a contest to win 100 pounds of cookies. All you have to do is gather the most browser cookies with MSCHF’s special Google Chrome plugin by Monday, May 3 at 1 PM Eastern time. It sounds like a fun contest but don’t count on winning, as the leaderboard is already filled with shenanigans. MSCHF announced the contest on Monday via Twitter with a link to its Cooooookies site that contains all kinds of cookie references. There’s a mock Nabisco logo in the upper-left corner, crumbs galore, and a GIF of the patron saint of cookies himself, Cookie Monster.

Am I FLoCed? A New Site to Test Google's Invasive Experiment

Today we’re launching Am I FLoCed, a new site that will tell you whether your Chrome browser has been turned into a guinea pig for Federated Learning of Cohorts or FLoC, Google’s latest targeted advertising experiment. If you are a subject, we will tell you how your browser is describing you to every website you visit. Am I FLoCed is one of an effort to bring to light the invasive practices of the adtech industry Google included with the hope we can create a better internet for all, where our privacy rights are respected regardless of how profitable they may be to tech companies.
