BBC has released reports of its independent inquiry into the methods used to secure the 1995 bombshell panorama interview with Princess Diana. The report has revealed that Martin Bashir deceived and induced Diana s brother Earl Spencer by showing him fake bank documents to gain his trust and get introduced to Diana. Bashir made a serious breach of the BBC guidelines on straight-dealing to obtain the famous interview with Diana, Princess of Wales.
The broadcaster s director-general Tim Davie made a full and unconditional apology after the findings of Lord Dyson s report was released. The investigation that went on for six months has cost the UK broadcaster £1.4 million ($2M) in total.
The former master of the rolls and head of civil justice was appointed to look into the circumstances surrounding the explosive 1995 interview, which famously featured Diana saying: “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
Bashir breached BBC rules by mocking up fake bank statements and showing them to Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, to gain access to the princess, the report said. This was a “serious breach” of producer guidelines on straight dealing.
The BBC in response has issued a “full and unconditional apology”.
Director-general Tim Davie said: “Although the report states that Diana, Princess of Wales, was keen on the idea of an interview with the BBC, it is clear that the process for securing the interview fell far short of what audiences have a right to expect. We are very sorry for this. Lord Dyson has identified clear failings.

Charlie Hebdo is facing widespread criticism for its most recent front cover, which shows a cartoon of the Queen kneeling on Meghan Markle’s neck in what appears to be a recreation of George Floyd’s death.
Alongside the caricature, a headline reads, “Why Meghan left Buckingham”, with the Duchess of Sussex replying – from underneath the Queen’s knee – “because I couldn t breathe anymore”.
Floyd, a black man, died last year after a white police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes, sparking a wave of Black Lives Matter protests around the world.
