Stern action will be taken against the millers who have not supplied rice to the government warehouses despite signing agreements, Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumdar said today.
The government has given go-ahead to 47 companies to import 73,000 tonnes of rice as part of its ongoing effort to contain food prices in the local market.
The commerce ministry has imposed restrictions on the export of aromatic rice to rein in prices of the special quality of cereal in the local market of Bangladesh.
Rice prices have edged up in Bangladesh in the last couple of days despite the cut in customs tariffs on the import of the staple food to 25 per cent to increase supply and contain prices.
