Council Says Add Three Months to the Meter Before Restarting Paid Downtown Haverhill Parking

By John Lee Grant | Haverhill City Council President Melinda E. Barrett. (WHAV News photograph.) The Haverhill City Council says now is not the time to restart paid parking in the downtown area. Council Vice President Colin F. LePage said Tuesday night the purchase all new equipment and signs is in the works but he said any plans to reinstate paid parking before that equipment is in place would be a mistake. “So they’re looking to get all new parking kiosks, meter heads and such and do signing with the new hours and the new rates, but that won’t be in place until three months from now,” he said.

Haverhill May Need to Invest in Merrimack Street Parking Deck Even as It Seeks to Demolish It

By John Lee Grant | February 26, 2021 A number of parking spaces are off limits as a chunk of concrete had to be removed from the parking deck. (WHAV News photograph.) Although the city wants a developer to buy and demolish the downtown Haverhill parking deck, it requires emergency repairs to at least temporarily restore more than a dozen parking spaces. Council President Melinda E. Barrett told her colleagues Tuesday she noticed a number of parking spaces at the Herbert H. Goecke Jr. Memorial Parking Deck are out of commission. “There was a crack in the upper deck there so, subsequently, some metal plates were put down. We’ve lost maybe seven spots up top and maybe nine spots down below, behind the Pentucket Bank,” she said.

Achievers Cuneo, Green-Byrd, McKeon and Jesiolowski Receive Haverhill Honors

By John Lee Grant | December 17, 2020 From left to right, retiring Community Action Executive Director John L. Cuneo, League of Women Voters honorees Kalister Green-Byrd and Roz McKeon and Holy Family Hospital President Craig Jesiolowski. Three community giants were recognized for achievements at Tuesday night’s Haverhill City Council meeting. Among them, John L. Cuneo who, after nearly four decades of service, retired last month as president and chief executive officer of Haverhill’s Community Action. Councilor John A. Michitson cited a handful of Cuneo’s achievements during his time in office. “He helped establish Emmaus as the city’s first homeless shelter. He started the city’s first substance abuse prevention program. He organized surplus food distributions and that is only a sampling of what John Cuneo has done. Haverhill has benefitted immeasurably from John Cuneo’s caliber and impact to serving the community,” he said.
