Proposed 18-story tower could ease Portland's housing crunch, alter skyline

If it becomes Maine’s tallest building as expected, an 18-story apartment tower to be built in downtown Portland would claim a title that hasn’t changed hands in over half a century. Or, depending on the measuring stick, the “tallest” distinction could remain with a structure in Lewiston that’s held it since 1890. One thing is clear: Redfern Properties’ proposed 190-foot building at 200 Federal St., Portland, would be the first new high-rise to rise anywhere in Maine for over a decade. Landry/French Construction, based in Scarborough, has agreed to serve as construction manager, the firm s CEO, Kevin French, and Redfern principal Jonathan Culley told Mainebiz. Landry/French is currently screening subcontractors and expects to have them signed on over the next 30 to 60 days.

Pamplin Media Group - New City Council to take up controversial urban renewal plan

New City Council to take up controversial urban renewal plan January 03 2021 Some oppose spending $67 million more in North and Northeast Portland until previously displaced residents are compensated. The new City Council will consider a controversial urban renewal proposal for North and Northeast Portland when it meets for the first time Wednesday. The Jan. 6 meeting will be the first with new members Mingus Mapp and Carmen Rubio. Mapps defeated Commissioner Chloe Eudaly in the November runoff election and Rubio won the race to succeed Commissioner Amanda Fritz in the May primary election. Mapps and Rubio will be participating for the first time with the previous council members: Mayor Ted Wheeler, who defeated Sarah Iannarone in the November election; Dan Ryan, who defeated Loretta Smith in an August runoff to fill the remainder of late Commissioner Nick Fish s term; and first-term Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty, who will be up for reelection in 2022 with Ryan.

Battle of the roof bars? Historic Portland hotel may expand its lofty lounge

One of Maine’s most historic hotels may build a 2,200-square-foot addition atop its roof, while what may be one of the state’s newest inns is refining plans for a rooftop structure of its own. The 93-year-old Westin Portland Harborview Hotel is proposing to build two outdoor patios adjoining its Top of the East Lounge, 15 stories above Congress Square in downtown Portland. The proposal goes to a public hearing Wednesday before the Portland Historic Preservation Board in the city’s first look at the project.  At the same meeting, the board is scheduled to discuss modifications to a planned rooftop lounge at the 135-room Canopy by Hilton Hotel, now under construction at the corner of Center and Commercial streets. Hilton and the hotel’s developer, Portland-based Fathom Cos., are already promoting Luna, the indoor-outdoor bar with a seventh-floor terrace, as “a first for the city.”
