County Looks at $1M Upgrade for E-Meetings

Beyer Requests Federal Funding for Arlington Park Projects, Mental Health Initiative

May 4, 2021 at 10:35am Rep. Don Beyer announced yesterday that he has requested federal funds to go toward a health initiative and two parks projects in Arlington County. If approved, the funding would fund repaving a section of the Bluemont Junction Trail and repairing replacing a key pedestrian bridge in Glencarlyn Park. It would also purchase vehicles needed by a mobile response team that would respond to behavioral health crises rather than police. The money would come from the Fiscal Year 2022 Community Project Funding Program, which provides targeted funding for local projects nationwide. Representatives were able to submit requests for up to 10 projects but there is no guarantee of approval. Beyer also requested money for projects benefiting the cities of Alexandria and Falls Church as well as Fairfax County.

Arlington Close to Hiring New Police Chief Amid Reforms to Department, Policing

April 28, 2021 at 10:45am Arlington County Manager Mark Schwartz aims to have a new police chief in place within the next month or two. And this police chief, he said during a meeting last week, must appreciate Arlington’s diversity and understand how different communities react to police presence. “Our police officers meet with residents, visitors and those who work here during the most stressful moments of their lives,” he said. “I’m looking for a chief who understands our community gains strength from its diversity.” The police department has been without a permanent leader since September, when the former police chief M. Jay Farr retired, citing souring relations with the County Board as one of his reasons for leaving. Acting chief Andy Penn is leading in his place.

Arlington County Board Approves New Budget That Holds Property Tax Rate Steady

Today at 11:30am The majority of Arlington homeowners will face higher property taxes, after the County Board approved a budget that holds the property tax rate steady. The Fiscal Year 2022 budget includes $1.4 billion in spending, a 3.5% increase from last year’s budget. Of that, $530 million will go to Arlington Public Schools, which will pass its final budget next month. Earlier this year County Manager Mark Schwartz proposed a budget that would have only boosted spending by 1.4%, calling it a “transition budget” appropriate for the challenges presented by the pandemic. The new county budget includes millions in additional expenditures, thanks to higher-than-expected business tax revenue and an expected $46 million in federal funding for Arlington’s local COVID-19 response from the American Rescue Plan, to be split between this year’s and next year’s budgets.

Peter's Take: Arlington Should Offer Evidence-Based Treatment for Young Adults with Severe Mental Illness

P eter’s Take is a biweekly opinion column. The views expressed are solely the author’s. We’ve all seen mentally ill people on the street, often disheveled, perhaps speaking to no one in particular, seemingly unaware that they are ill and unable to care for themselves. This may be the face of mental illness, but it shouldn’t be because recovery is achievable. Recovery requires early detection of psychotic illnesses, followed by prompt and effective treatment to prevent the cognitive decline that occurs when psychosis goes untreated. Early intervention also prevents or limits substance abuse, involvement in the legal system, and other negative but all-too-common consequences of severe mental illness.
