Honolulu police officer sentenced in federal corruption case

HONOLULU A retired Honolulu police officer was sentenced Wednesday to nine months in prison in connection with a corruption case involving a former Honolulu prosecutor and her retired police chief husband.
Niall Silva was sentenced after pleading guilty to conspiracy charges in 2016, Hawaii News Now reported.
He will be sent to prison in June and will serve a year of supervised release following his term.
Silva acknowledged his wrongdoing in court. “I’m truly sorry,” he said, while addressing Chief Judge Michael Seabright.

(AP) A retired Honolulu police officer and a Big Island firefighter were sentenced in connection with a corruption case involving a former Honolulu prosecutor and her retired police chief husband. Retired Honolulu officer Niall Silva was sentenced Wednesday, February 3, 2021 after pleading guilty to conspiracy charges in 2016. Big Island firefighter Jesse Ebersole, who in 2018 pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to obstruct, was also sentenced. Former deputy prosecutor Katherine Kealoha and her now estranged husband, former Police Chief Louis Kealoha, were both convicted of conspiracy, obstruction and bank fraud amid a federal investigation.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - More officials currently or previously tied to Honolulu Hale are being called to testify in connection with a federal probe stemming from the Kealoha scandal.
Former City Council members Ernie Martin and Trevor Ozawa arrived for federal grand jury proceedings Thursday along with current City Councilman Brandon Elefante.
Both Elefante and Martin declined to comment about their appearance. Hawaii News Now sent an email to Ozawa but did not hear back.
