RIDGELAND, Miss. (AP) Mississippi authorities are investigating after a police officer shot a 16-year-old boy who was suspected of shooting his own uncle in a hotel parking lot.
Detectives said the wounds to both people were not life-threatening.
The shootings happened Wednesday night in the Jackson suburb of Ridgeland at a hotel near the line between the two cities, news outlets reported.
Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the case, which is standard procedure for any shooting by or of law enforcement officers.
Ridgeland Police Chief John Neal said officers responded to a call about a person in the parking lot with a weapon. As police detained that person, investigators said they heard shots in another part of the lot.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Drivers discovered a defaced billboard on Interstate 55 Monday morning that showed support for George Floyd and an inflammatory message toward police officers who kill in the line of duty.
The billboard, which reads â[Expletive] those killer cops!â and âJustice for George Floydâ, covered an existing advertisement which showed a hand and engagement ring.
Whoever vandalized the original advertisement left part of the hand and painted an extended middle finger to complete the message.

Mississippi lawmakers consider doing away with prescription requirement on pseudoephedrine By Courtney Ann Jackson | February 25, 2021 at 11:03 PM CST - Updated February 26 at 8:18 AM
JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Mississippi is one of only two states still requiring a prescription for medicines containing pseudoephedrine.
But the legislature is weighing the option of allowing you to buy medicine like Claritin-D or others containing pseudoephedrine and ephedrine without a prescription.
“Pharmacies would have to use some software that tracks the amount you’ve purchased,” described Senator Joey Fillingange who filed Senate Bill 2119. “You can’t just jump from pharmacy A and B and C and D and just stockpile. There’s a limit of 3.6 grams a day that you can purchase in Mississippi or 7.2 for the whole month. So, you can’t pharmacy hop and stockpile it for yourself.”
