offering was winning and if you look at the new hampshire union leader editorials again and again they said, on philosophy, on solutions, i was winning. the wall street journal said my plan was bold and aggressive and they said that the romney plan was so timid it resembled obama. that is the wall street journal describing romney s plan. at that point romney decided he had to go negative and i spent three weeks saying to him much better to run a positive campaign and he said a variety of things of can t stand the heat get out of the kitchen and have broad shoulders, fine. if he believes this campaign is appropriate, i am prepared to draw a contrast. we put up, every tax increase he had while he was governor. now, affectually accurating totally correct, verifiable by anyone who wants to look but look at www.romneytaxes.com
so i think from their point of view it s hard to create a scenario where romney is not the nominee, but they re realistic and they know that until voters actually vote something could go wrong. they may have to fight for this. but they do think over the long run mitt romney will be the nominee. i have no doubt about that. but that s what they think. the pesky voters actually voting conundrum. thank you, mark. thanks, chris. so what s next in iowa? we re joined by democratic strategist tad devine and republican strategist kevin madden, who i should mention is a romney supporter. okay, kevin, you laugh to yourself when i read that quote about this is essentially in the bag. you worked very closely on the romney campaign in 08. is that not the sentiment because to mark s point romney is the best financed guy with the best organization across the country and across the early states. is that a sentiment that they hold if they don t say publicly? well, look, i think the best campaig
when you see mitt romney so far to the right, it s going to push latino voters further away. i think the republican party is making a huge mistake by staking out such virulently anti-immigrant views in this campaign. we appreciate your time this morning, gentlemen. and al sharpton joints me in studio this morning. good to have you here. as we talk about some of these new polls that are out, what do you think is provides that? well, i think that at this point romney is still the front-runner, but i think it shows there s this anyone but romney kind of spirit among republican voters. newt is about the fifth or sixth person that has now risen in the polls, and it clearly is
romney for a full year knowingly used a lawn service that employed undocumented immigrants. the exchange was more raw and more personal as it went on. here s the rest of it. a tough couple of debates for rick. i understand that and you are going to get testy. we hired a lawn company to mow our lawn and they had illegal immigrants working there. when that was pointed out to us, we let them go. you have a problem with allowing someone to speak. i suggest if you want to be president of the united states, you have to let both people speak. let me speak. at what point romney touched an opponent and perry shot him an angry glare. when health care came up, everyone on stage piled on romney. even newt gingrich who was trying to make avoiding attacks a virtue.
don t think people care. people care about what we talked about at the beginning. they care about jobs, they care about economic growth, and the more if i were romney, i wouldn t feel that badly about this. i m about jobs, not about bigotry. when do you believe first of all, i think this helps president obama in some ways because this display and he went through his own version of this. when will mitt romney give the kind of race and religion speech? because then senator obama had to address comments about his own pastor and religion at the same time. do you think some point romney will have to give that speech in light of the fact absolutely not. if i m mitt romney, i hope that all of these people keep allowing bigots to get up and speak for me. this hurts rick perry in my republican party. far more than it hurts mitt romney. they ve been there, they ve done that.
