Vatican Radio, the voice of the pope, turns 90

Vatican Radio, the voice of the pope, turns 90 Issued on: 3 min Vatican City (AFP) For 90 years, Vatican Radio has carried the voice of the pope to far-flung corners of the world, translated into dozens of languages. As it celebrated its birthday Friday, Pope Francis was among those paying tribute to a broadcaster that has provided a vital link between Rome and Catholic churches across the globe. Radio has this beautiful trait: it carries the word to the most distant places, the Argentine pontiff said. Robert Attarian, one of the two people who run Vatican Radio s Armenian service, told AFP that he feels like a bridge between the universal church and local Armenian churches, a diaspora of around 10 million people .

Vatican Radio turns 90: Carrying the Pope s voice to the whole world

By Massimiliano Menichetti Almost 12,000 hours of broadcasts in a single year, including radio commentaries, as well as news, liturgical and musical programmes. This is the identity of Vatican Radio, the radio station of the Holy See, established by Pope Pius XI, who entrusted it to the Society of Jesus, and which was built by Guglielmo Marconi ninety years ago. Today we broadcast in 41 languages and every day we bring the words of the Gospel and the voice of the Pope to the whole world. This anniversary is particularly challenging for us. We are celebrating 90 years at a time when one of the greatest trials for all humanity is underway due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our mission has always been to leave no one unaccompanied, and to bring the hope of the Christian proclamation, the voice of the Pope to the world, and to relate the facts of the news in the light of the Gospel. This moment involves and challenges us further.

Pope Francis to celebrate Mass for World Day for Consecrated Life

Share Thousands of men and women religious from all over the world fill St. Peter s Basilica every year to celebrate World Day for Consecrated Life. This year however, the pope s Mass will be much less crowded because of the pandemic. A year ago the pope reminded consecrated men and women of their fundamental mission. POPE FRANCIS 2020 “Men and women religious, who live to imitate Jesus, are called to bring that same gaze into the world: a gaze of compassion, a gaze that goes in search of those far off; a gaze that does not condemn, but encourages, frees, consoles.” It s that same gaze that Pope Francis shares with others who, like him, have said yes to the call to religious life.
