Picken's County Election Board Gets New Supervisor of Elections - Pickens

Stacey Godfrey, new Supervisor of Elections for Pickens County stands beside new elect Rhonda Wagner, Administrative Assistant The Pickens County Board of Elections met on July 15, 2021 to a Called Meeting which included the review of their Public Participation Policy on the agenda. The Reviewed Public Participation Policy agreed that public participation is encouraged and would include 5 minutes per comment once per meeting which would be taken into consideration but would not be responded to at the meeting. No one present at the Board meeting chose to comment and the meeting proceeded. Pickens County Board of Elections meets to elect their new Supervisor of Elections.

Pickens County Board of Education approves 2021-2022 budgetDragon s Corner, News July 9, 2021 , by Pam Guenther JASPER, Ga – The Pickens County Board of Education (BOE) discussed the proposed budget for 2021-2022 school year, as well as additional funds for Superintendent and bonus pay for contracted staff. There would be no significant changes to the current budget for the proposed $41,642. The only thing currently not approved but is expected to be would be the federal art grant. The eleven new FY 20 federal grants range from $750 to $11 million. The art grant was the only grant still waiting to be signed. Ms. Smith also stated that every department was eligible to receive a grant as long as it was allowable but everything must be related to the ‘COVID’ pandemic. The school system is eligible to receive various grants ranging from $624 to 7.1 million dollars. but she went on to explain that no matter the amount of the grant they all required the same amount of paperwork.

Consequently, it leaves many hesitant to trust the board after some members reversed course from their original expectations. In previous statements, Chairwoman Sue Finley had hoped to retain Townsend in a different capacity while trying to find a budget-neutral solution. After weeks of back and forth between both Townsend and the school board, it was clear that both parties were not going to get what they wanted.

Rick Jasperse, who was unable to attend, sent a letter of concern regarding the process of appointing board members to the Pickens County Board of Elections. Rep. Rick Jasperse Initially, Chairman Kris Stancil requested a review by the state to ensure Pickens complied with current state law. Due to time constraints, Jasperse focused on the Airport Authority, the Library Board, and the Elections Board. Out of the three, Jasperse concluded that issues need to be addressed concerning the Pickens County Board of Elections.
