ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Phoebe Putney Health System’s top official said Tuesday that the winter surge of COVID-19 has not reached its peak yet because too many Southwest Georgians are still contracting the virus.
“Based on a high number of hospital admissions over the last week, it does not appear we have yet made it through the peak of this winter COVID-19 surge,” said Scott Steiner, Phoebe Putney Health System CEO and president. “Too many southwest Georgians continue to contract the virus, be hospitalized because of the virus and die from the virus.”

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) - Phoebe Putney Health System is seeing a decrease in hospitalized COVID-19 patients this week, the hospital systemâs CEO said.
Scott Steiner, Phoebe Putney Health System CEO and president, said the hospital system, âthankfully,â is seeing the decrease.
âHowever, that is more a result of significant patient discharges rather than a sharp decrease in admissions,â Steiner said. âYesterday, we admitted 11 COVID-19 patients here in Albany, which has been our daily average this month, and nearly all of those patients are coming from our communities. They are not being transferred from other health systems outside our area.â

“Today, our volume of hospitalized COVID-19 patients is nearly five and a half times what it was the week before Thanksgiving, and as transmission rates remain high throughout Georgia, we expect our volume to continue to increase.” said Scott Steiner, Phoebe Putney Health System CEO and president. “The greatest weapons in our fight against the virus are wearing masks and getting the COVID-19 vaccine.”
