LAHS James Zook named best overall actor at Otero Arts Festival

LA Junta Tribune Las Animas High School senior James Zook competed in the Otero Arts Festival last week and earned some high honors. Zook competed against seven other entrants in the monologue division and won honorable mention status. His competition was against students from La Junta. Zook was awarded Best Actor overall in the competition. Zook, Cailey Burns and Sarah Van Vleet performed a scene from an Edgar Allen Poe Radio Play and won an honorable mention. Jimmi Boyd and Rayelynn Landry performed a scene from Check Please. Kyla Whattler and Phoebe Frausto performed a scene from the Princess and the Pirate. They competed against five other scenes performed by students from La Junta and Swink.

Las Animas students continue tradition of Santa Fe Trail Day

LA Junta Tribune A longtime tradition will continue this year as students at Las Animas High School will help host the 87th Annual Santa Fe Trail Day on April 30 to May 2. The theme of this year s event is 200 years of struggles along the Santa Fe Trail, which was chosen to coincide with the bicentennial of the Santa Fe Trail. There are plenty of activities planned for the event with a costume contest, king and queen judging, a parade and plenty of more festivities. There will be booths downtown that day and that evening, we re going to have a street dance downtown with vendors and games, Teresa Garcia, a Santa Fe Day sponsor, said. Also, there s an art show at the museum and there will be wine and cheese to announce the winners on Friday afternoon.
