In the 1870s, in spite of the pain of Reconstruction, a Renaissance began to occur for Arkansas as some of the most important colleges in the state were born. Part of this flowering of knowledge was the creation of Philander Smith College in Little Rock.
It is a story of positivity that has come from a story of brokenness, and it is being made possible by students in another state lending helping hands following the March 31 tornadoes.
Galloway Women s College was one of the longest survivors from among the schools established in the 1800s by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in Arkansas. Dedicated in honor of Bishop Charles Betts Galloway on April 18, 1889, the Searcy-based school endured until its final merger with Hendrix College in Conway in 1933.
