[chanting] reporter thousands of detroit teachers walked off their jobs today in a wage dispute, forcing 94 out of 97 city schools to close and leaving more than 47,000 students out of class. Ivy bailey is the interim Teachers Union president. June 30th were being told that our School System is basically broke. Reporter the oneday sickout was called because city schools are expected to run out of cash july 1st, no money for the teachers, no funding for summer squall or special education programs. Detroits school district, which has dilapidated buildings crawling with mold and infested with rodents, has been in debt for several years now, staying afloat by asking for shortterm loans from the state, which it now owes 3. 5 billion.
