Worcester police release 911 tape in fatal shooting of armed man on Grafton Street

WORCESTER  A 31-year-old armed man shot by Worcester police on April 20 told a police dispatcher that the bomb strapped to him was attached to his heart, and that if his heart were to stop, the bomb would blow up. Phet Gouvonvong Jr. called 911 about 10:30 p.m., and was transferred to an emergency dispatcher in Worcester. A short time later, he asked for police officers to be sent to his location, in the area of 258 Grafton St. Gouvonvong said he did not know where he was, instead telling the dispatcher he was near a church, a basketball court and a Pizza Hut. The dispatcher asked if he was on Grafton Street, and he said that he was. He also said he had an AR rifle.

Mother of Phet Gouvonvong, man killed by Worcester police, has questions

WORCESTER Ann Marie Gonzalez has a lot of unanswered questions about her son’s death  and also his life.  Less than a year before her 31-year-old son, Phet Gouvonvong Jr. died in a police standoff in Worcester, he’d shown up at her door for the first time in nearly four years.  “I don’t know what happened within that 3½- to 4-year gap,” she said in a phone conversation Thursday from her home in Southbridge, recalling how she’d reported him missing years before. “Everybody was looking for him,” she said, but he didn’t call, and he didn’t write. One day, about eight months ago, she said, he just showed up at her door with his sister.

Worcester Police Department will begin wearing body cameras by 2022

WORCESTER  The city Friday said it intends to implement a police body camera program by 2022 at the latest, and will start scheduling meetings to get community input shortly. “The city is committed to a body camera program, and will soon be engaging in community conversations on what that would look like,” spokesman Walter Bird wrote in an email to the Telegram & Gazette on Friday.  “I’m grateful for the announcement from the city today,” James P. McGovern, the city’s longtime Democratic Congressman, said in a telephone interview, adding that federal COVID-19 relief funds should ease the program’s cost.

Media focuses on 6 police killings in 24 hours after Chauvin verdict -- Society's Child -- Sott.net

Sun, 25 Apr 2021 18:45 UTC © CC0 / Pexels Even as the Derek Chauvin case was fresh in memory the reading of the verdict in a Minneapolis courtroom, the shackling of the former police officer, the jubilation at what many saw as justice in the death of George Floyd even then, blood flowed on America s streets. Comment: This is an AP article. It s not news. It s designed to further inflame racial tensions in the U.S. And even then, some of that blood was shed at the hands of law enforcement. At least six people were fatally shot by officers across the United States in the 24 hours after jurors reached a verdict in the murder case against Chauvin on Tuesday. The roll call of the dead is distressing:
