Russian nuclear fuel has been transported via Finland by air despite Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, YLE news reported.Two planes carrying Russian nuclear fuel recently left Helsinki Airport for an undisclosed.
Police and staff from Fortum and nuclear watchdog Stuk were on hand to supervise the transfer of nuclear fuel, which is not subject to EU sanctions. On Sunday, police said they were investigating a drone seen operating at the airport at the time.
The Finnish majority state-owned energy company will invite bids from new fuel supplier candidates once the operating licences for its nuclear power plant in Loviisa, Finland, expire in 2027 and 2030.
