Its wonderful to welcome michele to sais, i am so grateful to her for putting us as a stop on her book tour. I heard about this book last fall and so have been anticipating it x its an exciting read and its an exciting read. I think she has sort of been asking the question why we ignore crises that we can see coming until they literally stampede us. I think shes got a new paradigm for speaking about risk, and im excited to hear her discuss some of her ideas this evening. Front page of the detroit news with the headline obama fosters hope, but flint fears remain. The detroit free press, president obama saying ive got your back. [video clip] do notnt obama i believe that anybody consciously wanted to hurt the people in flint. This is not the place to sort out every screwup that resulted in contaminated water. I do think there is a larger issue that we have to acknowledge. That part ofthink what contributed to this crisis was a broader mindset, a bigger attitude a corrosive that exists in our politics and exists into many levels of our government. In too many levels of our government. [applause] president obama a mindset that believes that Less Government is the highest good, no matter what. A mindset that says environmental rules designed to keep your water clean or air optional or not that important. Or unnecessarily burdens bus
It starts back to when the father of wyatt earp, most wellknown, his name is nicholas. He was basically left his family. Emporarily in illinois he heard about the gold rush in northern california. He went back to the midwest. He ventured down to southern california. And he got for the San Bernardino valley. He found that one day he would come back to San Bernardino. We will visit the San Bernardino history and Railroad Museum and talk about the importance of the railroad to San Bernardino with the historian Vice President. Located in the 1918 santa fe depot, the museum contains many objects related to the railroad history. Construction was completed in 1918. It replaced a wooden structure approximately 100 yards east of here that burned in 1960. Responsibility to support a quality of opportunity. Americans very much believe there is a role for government to play in helping everyone move up the economic ladder, especially people who are working hard and playing by the rules and doing all the right things. Europe usewestern the term middleclass . I dont know that it is as critical a part of their discussion as it is for ours. I would like to take something from that wonderful question from the caller. It is true that in these technician, or decline of the american middle class over the last corner century has coincided with a massive rise of poverty for millions of people around the world and that the opening of Global Markets and advancement of technology has absolutely helped, and the liberalization of economies in china, we have far fewer poor people in the world today than we did a quartercentury ago. That is amazing and something everyone should celebrate. It is not true that that is a necessary tradeoff. There is no reason
