start trying to pull the boat back to shore. all right. what is i read reports that there was some noise before it started listing and tilting and then over and down. is there any sort of preliminary thought an to what has taken this ferry down? well, greta, they are still not too sure exactly what that loud thud was that some of the people who got off the boat say they heard before it started to tilt. of course, there is speculation it could be a rock. some maritime observers there say that the channel where the boat was passing through doesn t have those type of formations. so they are really not too sure. we probably won t know until they can actually bring the boat back to shore. this is a terrible story. absolutely terrible. jason, thank you. thank you. so how could a giant passenger ferry just sink? former coast guard captain peter boynton joins us. good evening, sir. good evening, sir. that s awful fast sinking, isn t it, for a
sticking up. it s at least deep enough to swallow a ferry this size. do we know? we don t know i believe the depth in that area go ahead, peter. i believe it s 90 to 100 feet. at least the early reports suggest 90 to 100 feet. the conditions, you said it s cold, right, but it s fairly choppy, and in your experience with these things, you know, as peter said we re not sure, you know, what was happening inside of the ship. it was probably better for them to get off immediately. but you don t know. this happened 14, 15 hours ago, i would imagine, in darkness, you don t know at that particular point what to do. as peter said, it s up to the people in charge to get you to safety quickly. that s correct. i mean, this is every sea farers worst nightmare. for people on as passengers, irregular sea farers, if you like, their one shot at a
trip, we just don t know. we re going to go to rob. peter just told us about what s happening inside the ship, but look at that water. you saw how choppy it is. the question is, is it easy, difficult, to veer off course in this area, rob? you know, it s a very tight area through there. there s a lot of shoels, a lot of small islands. anything at this stage is really supposition. you know, we have some blessings to count in that this occurred early in the day, in daylight, with relatively good weather, relatively calm conditions, and in an area that s relatively populous. there are major bases nearby, military bases nearby, and there are a lot of ships on the scene very quickly. so the toll could have been a lot higher much earlier on. what are we talking about for depths here? because from what i understand, just a small part of the hull is
