Welcome to the Gameday Guide.
Every weekend during the college lacrosse season, US Lacrosse Magazine staff will riff here on the juiciest matchups, trendiest topics, biggest storylines and hottest takes.
In case you forgot, Virginia is still the reigning national champion.
The Cavaliers reminded everyone that they are a Memorial Day Weekend contender again during their first game in 355 days a 20-11 win over Towson at Klöckner Stadium last Saturday. Perhaps even more impressive was the fact the scoring ledger didn’t include Matt Moore, Ian Laviano or Dox Aitken. The senior trio (Aitken is a fifth year) have combined for 304 goals at Virginia.

In what was No. 5 Denver’s first competitive action in over 10 months, Pioneer coach Bill Tierney said postgame that though he expected there to be an immense enjoyment of the experience his team had ripped away from them last March, all was normal once some early mistakes were made.
“It didn’t take long to be frustrated,” Tierney said. “It didn’t take long to get back to being another lacrosse game that you hope like hell to win, and we were lucky to do so.”
The usual sluggish start that have been a staple of early February college lacrosse in recent years was exacerbated not only by the long layoff, but also by a valiant underdog effort from the Utes in the Pioneers’ 9-8 victory on Saturday afternoon in Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
We can officially say it. Lacrosse is back, Y’all!
It was a much slower first weekend of action than usual with only two games on the docket, but college lacrosse officially returned on Saturday. Bellarmine took down Mercer on in the first game of the season and just a few hours later we saw Denver best Utah.
Denver 9, Utah 8
The Denver Pioneers overcame missing 12 players, including Schuyler Blair, Alex Simmons, and Colin Squires, struggling heavily on the power play (1-for-8), and going 8-for-20 at the faceoff dot, to get hot in the second half and put away the visiting Utah Utes, 9-8, in their home opener.

Utah’s 12-game Independent schedule has been announced.
The Utes open this Saturday, Jan. 30 against Denver one of two games on the slate for an early start to the 2021 season.
Given the challenges of geography and the lack of a conference home, the Utes will be road warriors, with nine of their games away. The most exciting might be the last one when Utah visits Syracuse in the Carrier Dome on May 8.
The Orange are one of two ACC foes on the schedule, with Virginia set for April 17.
The Utes will rattle off four games before the month of February is closed. After Denver, it’s Bellarmine, Air Force and Loyola. Then, they open their home portion with Jacksonville on March 6 and Westminster (DII program) a week later.
