discussion. i m thrilled you re doing this. thank you for having me. i m pleased to be here. it s great to have you. you are the guy. and before i play some of these amazing moments that you have insights on, walk us through what it means for these candidates to prepare for such a large debate field. i ve had the opportunity to work on multi-candidate debates, particularly in 08, when we had the democratic side starting with nine, 10, 11 candidates. in 16 when we started originally with five. it s very different than preparing for a general election debate where it s usually one on one, in the case of 92 with perot in there, it was three. i think that these candidates must start with defining what are their goals and what is their strategy? because if you go in there ad hoc, it s always going to be problematic what is your goal when you re up against nine other people? exactly. for some of these people, they aren t known. they re known to you and me because we follow this ev
democratic party, howard schultz s home state of washington there. democrats have bad memories. they ll blame ralph nader in 2000 and even jill stein in 2016. is there data that shows that third party candidates draw more from one party than another? not really, no. obviously, ralph nader haunts the memories of democrats more than anyone possibly could imagine but if you look back from 1980 when john anderson ran he took it from carter to reagan. and 1992, perot, he took equally between clinton and bush. i m just not sure there s a lot of evidence to suggest that schultz will pull from either one of the parties disproportionately. president trump s approval rating is so low that democrats would be a favorite right now and anything that could enter the party and upset that worries them a lot. we know his team is looking at polling data like the newest gallup polling that says 39% of americans see themselves as independent.
don t work: he has given 150 is it million or billion $150,000, $150,000 to democrats in the past. that s a lot of money. i was a democrat. he has voted democratically he has said most of his life. now is he a centrist and independent. maybe he is saying that because the country feels so divided and people are so angry on both sides, maybe he feels like he could win. steve: the worry is would he essentially have the perot effect that drew so many voters away from george herbert walker bush bush who was the incumbent and opened the door for bill clinton. would that happen for donald trump and re-election. don t know. brian: he is a self-made success story and another run out of brook written. not sure what carley shimkus was here. carley: i thought you were going to say i was self-made. ainsley: do you have 3.5 billion in your bank account as well. oh, no. maybe that s something to aspire to some day. so happy to be with you this morning. suspect in custody accused of barricading hi
you were on the foreign policy side, but you were very close. did he ever express regret for having done that? no. he thought it was the right necessary thing to do. the economy benefitted tremendously, both the growth as well as the elimination of the deficit. i think you re right politically. it brought buchanan into the primary process, which hurt the president. any time a sitting president faces an internal challenge, he pays a price. it brought perot into the general election. i think that helped explain the outcome. the president was comfortable. i think where he could have done more, ironically enough, is talking about it. i think if he had gone on television and said to the american people, i broke my promise. but here s why. it was difficult for me, but here s why i believe it was the right and necessary thing to do, i believe he might have been re-elected. we talked about it, and brent scowcroft and i, who was his national security adviser, talked about it. the president ca
