Police Media Spokesman Attorney at law Ajith Rohana stated that according to the information revealed during the interrogation, the suspect was taken to the Rendapola area in Meerigama this morning, the suspect was shot by the police while attempting to escape from police custody. He was later admitted to the Mirigama Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Ajith Rohana stated that a police inspector had also been shot during the exchange of fire and the latter had been admitted to the Wathupitiwala Hospital. A suspect arrested several months earlier over drug offenses has been identified to have links with extremists organizations.
The resident of the Keselwatta area in Panadura had been arrested by the Peliyagoda Police, Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana.
Investigations into the suspect have revealed that large sums of money had been credited to his bank account from Dubai.
It has also been revealed that some of the said money had been transferred to an organization that promotes Islamic extremism, the DIG stated.
Accordingly, the suspect has been handed over to the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) for further investigations.

Colombo (News 1st); Attorney General Dappula De Livera has directed the Inspector General of Police to arrest all Suspect Police Officers of the Peliyagoda Police involved in the assault of law student Migara Gunaratne.
State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne, the Coordinating Officer to the Attorney General told News 1st that the IGP was also directed to produce the suspects before a court on charges under the Penal Code & Torture Act.
04 police officers attached to the Peliyagoda Police station were interdicted following an incident of an assault on a law student inside the police station on the 25th of February 2021.
