81-year-old miracle patient recovers after 71 days of battling COVID-19 By: WLEX Staff and last updated 2021-04-05 14:44:43-04 LANCASTER, Ky. — After spending 71 days battling COVID-19 in the hospital, 81-year-old Joe Barker went home to find a dozen U.S. flags lining his driveway and his friends from the Kentucky Patriot Guard Riders cheering him on. Barker was admitted to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, Kentucky on Jan. 21 after testing positive for the coronavirus. His condition quickly deteriorated, and he was put on a ventilator four days later. “The doctors gave us no hope,” said Peggy Barker, Joe’s wife. “We just relied on our faith and that’s what got us through. That was the only thing we had at times.”

2020 Year in Review: Feature Stories • The Yellow Springs News

Yellow Springs kicked off the beginning of 2020, as always, with the traditional ball drop overseen by Lance Rudegeair; MTFR personnel handed out hot cocoa, and at least one marriage proposal greeted the new year. The Reach Out Free Clinic, which was held each Tuesday evening at Central Chapel AME Church, celebrated a year of operation in early January. The free, donation-based clinic, a satellite location of Reach Out Dayton, closed due to the pandemic in March; the Dayton location shuttered permanently later in the year. Nan Harshaw, longtime chair of the MLK Day Planning Committee, was awarded the annual Peacemaker Award at the 2020 Martin Luther King Day celebration. The late Willa Dallas was also recognized for her civil rights efforts and her role in initiating the annual local event.

30 years of letters to Santa • The Yellow Springs News

Among all the mail ferried by the U.S. Postal Service every year, there’s one name and address that arguably receives more correspondence than any other in the country: Santa Claus, North Pole. Considering Santa’s busy schedule, however, it’s no surprise that the famed Christmas patron needs some help answering fan mail. For the past three decades, local Santa-designated aides have been providing that assistance, making sure that Santa not only receives the letters, but dutifully taking dictation after a fashion to make sure every letter writer receives a response. For years, the letters have been filed away presumably for naughty-or-nice record-keeping. Now the letters have found a new home at the YS Library, where past letter writers or their grown-ups are invited to take home their holiday missives.
